THE EDWARD JOHNSTON FOUNDATION The Edward Johnston Foundation’s Sixth Ditchling Annual International Seminar will take place over the weekend of 5/6/7 May 2006 The full programme appears below. Ditchling lies in glorious Sussex countryside under the escarpment of the South Downs. The village was the home of Edward Johnston, Eric Gill and the community which was to make its name world-famous among those who value the tradition of fine letterforms. The EJF's annual international seminars are gaining a reputation as a relaxed and informal gathering for the widest spectrum of lettering interests.

PROGRAMME FRIDAY 5 MAY 6.30pm Reception at the Edward Johnston Foundation's house in Ditchling with a showing of the film "Looking for Mr Gill", part of Luke Holland's award-winning series A Very English Village for BBC4. It is hoped the filmmaker will be present to introduce it and to answer questions from the audience. This will be followed by fish and chip supper at The White Horse. SATURDAY 6 MAY 10.30am Coffee. 10.45 Welcome to Ditchling: Introduction by Chairman of the seminar, Peter Guy 11.00am Sumner Stone Reflections on the pre-serif Roman letter 12.30pm Lunch Break 2.00pm Christopher de Hamel Medieval Illuminated Bestiaries 3.15pm Interval 3.30pm Christopher Burke: Formal writing, artist-scripts, and bread-&-butter type 4.45pm Conclusion
7.30pm Special Taste Italia supper with a classical guitar recital by the Albach Duo (Rebecca Baulch and David Black) with music by the Italian composers Vivaldi, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Carrulli.
SUNDAY 7 MAY 10.30am George Kirkpatrick: The Life and Strange, Surprising Adventures of George Kirkpatrick of Canterbury, sometime Bookbinder (sometime not) as Related by Himself 12noon Discussion 1.00pm Lunch 2.15pm Coffee 2.30pm John Neilson: Receding Hairlines 3.45pm Conclusion In the intervals: Dr John Nash will demonstrate italic brush lettering and will exhibit work from his William Sharpington and Kenneth Breese collections.
