Biography

Robert Slimbach’s interest in lettering began in the early 1980s when a job as a screen printer led him to start up his own business in greetings cards and poster design. In 1983, primarily to finance his own design work, Slimbach took a job at Autologic in Newbury Park, California. It was in the type drawing department at Autologic that Slimbach began to work seriously on type and calligraphy, and soon his interest in producing a working typeface became all consuming. He began submitting typeface designs to the International Typeface Corporation, and in 1987 ITC released his ITC Slimbach. Slimbach has been a fulltime member of the Adobe type staff since 1987. He believes that drawing letters by hand is still the best way to flesh out a new design «These are spontaneous activities in which mood and inspiration translate directly and quickly to the work in hand....new ideas flow easily, and there are many opportunities for happy accidents to appear.
