Hermann Zapf was born in Nuremburg, Germany in 1920. Originally hoping to train as an electronic engineer today he is recognised as one of the western world’s great calligraphers, type designers and typographers. He was self-taught from the books of Edward Johnston and Rudolph Koch. He has designed alphabets for metal type, photocomposition and digital systems; the range of alphabets including Roman, Greek, Cyrlilic, and Arabic. Since 1947 he has been adviser to many type foundries, including Stemple and Mergenthaler Linotype. He has always been ready to embrace change and was one of the first designers to work with Donald Knuth’s Metafont programme. He is an honourary member of twenty four leading societies and institutions around the world and is President of the Edward Johnston Foundation. Zapf’s latest type face Zapfino was issued in his eightieth year. Palatino, which he designed in 1949, will be recognised by many of today’s computers users.
