Biography
Eric Gill was born in Brighton in 1882, an early talent for drawing led him to art school in Chichester. During his apprenticeship in an architects office in London he attended the first calligraphy classes held by
Edward Johnston at the Central School. Soon he had branched into cutting inscriptions in stone. He settled in Ditchling in 1907 and took up both sculpture and wood engraving. In 1925 he was drawn into type design by Stanley Morison of the Monotype Corporation. His types Perpetua and Gill Sans are amongst the most popular of the twentieth century. He died in 1940.
